This glossary contains words that people in the Accounting and Management field might use in their work environment.
accountant
noun
A person whose job is to keep, inspect, and analyse financial accounts.
Example: Almost every transaction recorded by the ACCOUNTANT will involve cash sooner or later.

noun
a company's yearly report to shareholders, documenting its activities and finances in the previous financial year.
Example: The annual report of my company is ready.

asset
noun
Property owned by a person or company, regarded as having value and available to meet debts, commitments, or legacies.
Example: Moreover, the pattern of ASSET and income distribution was very skewed.

balance
noun
The difference between the sum of debit entries and the sum of credit entries entered into an account during a financial period.
Example: The positive trade BALANCE almost doubled (from EUR 44.6 million in 2003 to EUR 853.2 million in 2004).

noun
The owner's contribution to or interest in a business.
Example: Opening the CAPITAL account may entail an increase in exposure and therefore in the potential vulnerability of the economies.

creditor
noun
A person or company to whom money is owed.
Example: The statements in the IVA did not give rise to a trust; they were mere statements made to the husband's CREDITORs of the wife's willingness to co - operate for the sale of property and realisation of the husband's interest for the CREDITOR's benefit.

Something, typically money, that is owed or due.
Example: I paid off my debts.

An excess of liabilities over assets, of losses over profits, or of expenditure over income.
Example: The crash of IT sector, current account DEFICIT and increasing energy prices were inevitably leading in to a financial crisis in the US stock markets.

exchange
noun
A transfer of goods, services, or money between two parties.
Example: It is evident that authorities were originally interested in the idea of extending the area of state farms, as these were given much needed privileged access to credit, foreign EXCHANGE and direct subsidies (Kaimowitz, 1986).

The cost required for something; the money spent on something.
Example: Overheads, selling and administration, R&D and marketing EXPENSE are split between departments.

fiscal period
noun
The time between the day your business starts its business year and the day it ends its business year.
Example: It has taken a loss in each fiscal period since.

Money received, especially on a regular basis, for work or through investments.
Example: This year, my incomes have increased.

A legal agreement, contract, or document.
Example: The indenture wasn't respected by the borrower.

Money paid regularly at a particular rate for the use of money lent, or for delaying the repayment of a debt.
Example: The amount of interest being charged by my bank was correct.

The amount for which something can be sold on a given market.
Example: Nevertheless, the strength of its MARKET VALUE is affected by the industry sector.

A contractual agreement among individuals to share resources and operations in a jointly run business.
Example: Woodforde has a successful doubles partnership with fellow Aussie Todd Woodbridge.

sales journal
noun
A specialized accounting journal and it is also a prime entry book used in an accounting system to keep track of the sales of items that customers(debtors) have purchased on account by charging a receivable on the debit side of an accounts receivable account and crediting revenue on the credit side.
Example: The source documents for the Sales journal are copies of all invoices given to the debtors.

An owner of shares in a company.
Example: This was in conflict with SHAREHOLDER expectations that would have seen efficiency as one mechanism to fulfill their purposes: to grow profits.

The act of joining two or more organizations or businesses into one.
Example: After a Polygram and MCA merger in 2000, the EU allowed Sony and BMG TO MERGE in 2004, and EMI, Warner Music, Sony and Bertelsmann are currently seeking approval for new planned mergers.

noun
A completed agreement between a buyer and a seller to exchange goods, services, or financial assets in return for money.
Example: There was scope for TRANSACTION cost reductions, which could potentially be achieved through key barrier removal.
